Does ICT affect the demand for vocationally educated workers?

Abstract This paper examines the effect of information and communication technologies (ICT) on demand for workers in Switzerland. We compare hypotheses that an increase ICT leads to upskilling or job polarization investigate their implications countries where vocational education training (VET) is most widespread program at upper secondary level. Using data from a large employer–employee survey, we create novel measure based percentage within firms. allows us assess impact educational composition workforce by exploiting variation over time. find has 1996 2018: decreases low-skilled while increasing high-skilled workers, especially those with tertiary education. These results strongly suggest VET valid alternative strictly academic education, because degree are as good, better, adjusting technological change
